Where Can I Study Radiography In South Africa?

Very few institutions offer Bachelor’s Degrees in Radiography. Some institutions that do offer these degrees are: 

  • University of Johannesburg (UJ)
  • University of Pretoria (UP)
  • Durban University of Technology (DUT)
  • Tshwane University of Technology (TUT)

However, there are other institutions that offer Diplomas in Radiography.

What Is The Difference Between Radiography And Radiology?

Radiology consists of the tests done using electromagnetic waves such as X-rays and Ultrasound. Radiography is reading and interpreting the results of these tests.

Can I Study Radiography In South Africa Part Time?

Yes, you can study Radiography part-time, but only if you are studying a Diploma course. All universities offering Bachelor’s Degrees in Radiography offer their courses through full-time study only. 

What Subjects Do You Need To Study Radiography In South Africa?

The subject requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree in Radiology are as follows: 

  • English with 50% or above
  • Maths with 50% or above 
  • Physics with 50% or above 
  • Life Sciences with 50% or above

Some universities will allow you to have either Physics OR Life Sciences, but many require you to have both. Check with the university you are applying to about whether they require both. 

Can I Do Radiography With Maths Literacy?

No, you cannot study Radiography with Maths Literacy. You must have Maths to do Radiography, as this is a Medical Degree. This means your studies are in the field of Medicine, which does not accept Maths Literacy. 

How Many Points Are Needed For Radiography In South Africa?

Most universities require a minimum APS of 27 for a Bachelor’s Degree in Radiography. However, requirements can vary amongst universities, so check with the university you are applying to about their entry requirements. 

However, if you would like to study for a Diploma, some universities will accept an APS of 22 for a Diploma course in Radiography. However, this may also vary amongst universities. 

How Long Does It Take To Study Radiography?

This depends on the qualification you are studying. If you are studying for a Bachelor’s Degree, it will take a minimum of four years to complete. However, if you are doing a Diploma, it will take a minimum of three years to complete. 

What Have We Learned?

  • There are very few institutions that offer Degree courses in Radiography in South Africa
  • Radiology is the term for the tests such as X-rays and Ultrasounds, Radiography is the reading and interpretation of the results of those tests
  • You cannot do Radiography with Maths Literacy
  • Radiography requires a minimum APS of 27
  • It can take a minimum of three to four years to study a Radiography qualification
